Hail damage on shingles doesn't always look like much from the yard. The hits bruise the mat, knock granules loose and crack the seal, and the leaks may not show up for a year. That's why a hailstorm is followed by a week of trucks in the neighborhood and why it pays to know the process before you sign anything. On June 26, 2023, for example, a one-inch hail report came in about eight miles from Fayetteville. Hail of that size is common in spring and summer thunderstorms here.
The claim, in order
- Write down the date and time of the storm, and photograph hail on the ground if you can, with a coin for scale.
- Look from the ground at gutters, downspouts, window screens, the AC unit and vents. Dents on soft metals tell an adjuster hail hit the property.
- Get an inspection. A roofer on the roof marks hits on each slope, photographs them, checks the vents and flashing, and measures the roof.
- Decide whether to file. If the damage is minor and under your deductible, a claim may not be worth it. If it's real, call your insurer and get a claim number.
- Meet the adjuster. You can have your roofer there. Agreeing on the scope on site saves weeks of back and forth.
- Compare the insurer's estimate to the roof. Missing line items such as vents, drip edge, flashing or gutters get raised with photos, not arguments.
- Sign a contract that follows state law and keep every document: estimate, supplements, invoices and the final photos.
What hail damage looks like up close
On asphalt shingles, a fresh hail hit is a dark spot where granules were knocked off, often with a soft, bruised feel when pressed, like the skin of an apple. Older or brittle shingles may crack instead. Hits tend to cluster on the slopes facing the direction the storm came from. Soft metals tell the same story: round dents on gutters, downspouts, box vents, ridge caps and the fins of the AC unit.
What hail damage isn't: blistering from manufacturing, scuffs from foot traffic, or granule loss spread evenly over an old roof. A good inspection separates those, because an adjuster will. We mark the hits we find, count them per test square on each slope, and photograph them with the chalk marks so the evidence speaks for itself.
The rules that protect you
| Rule | What it does |
|---|---|
| S.L. 2024-11 (Senate Bill 124), effective Oct 1, 2024 | A residential roof repair or replacement contract must include a five-business-day cancellation period after an insurance claim denial. The roofer can't start work or take payment in that window, except emergency work to prevent further damage. Violations are a Class 1 misdemeanor. Work by NC-licensed general contractors and their subcontractors, and sellers of roofing materials, is excluded. |
| G.S. 14-401.13, off-premises sales | A sale made at your door generally carries a three-business-day right to cancel. |
| Your deductible | It's yours to pay. We don't offer to absorb or rebate it, and you should be cautious of anyone who does. |
Door-knockers after a storm
Most people who knock after a hailstorm mean well; some don't. Before signing, ask for proof of insurance, a written scope, and an address you could drive to. Don't sign anything that hands over your claim. Take the three business days if you need them, and get a second opinion on any damage someone says they found on your roof.
Why hail claims stack up
Research from the insurance industry's Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety found that a roof already damaged by hail is far more likely to have a claim after the next hail event. That's a reason to get damage documented and properly repaired rather than left alone, and a reason to think about the next roof's material when this one is replaced.
If something goes wrong
Start with the contractor in writing. If that fails, North Carolina's Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division takes complaints about home repair and sales practices. This page is general information, not legal or insurance advice; your policy and your insurer's decision govern your claim.
People also ask
Should I file a claim for every hailstorm?
No. If an inspection finds little damage, or the repair costs less than your deductible, a claim may not be worth it. Get the inspection first.
Will my rates go up if I file?
That's between you and your insurer, and policies differ. Ask your agent before filing if it's a concern.
What happens if my claim is denied?
Under S.L. 2024-11 you have five business days after the denial to cancel a residential roofing contract, and no non-emergency work or payment can happen in that window.
Can you talk to my insurance company for me?
We'll document the damage and meet the adjuster on site if you ask. We don't act as your public adjuster; the claim stays yours.
How soon after a hailstorm should I get the roof checked?
Within a few weeks is sensible. Insurers set deadlines for reporting, and fresh damage is easier to document.
